Dumpster Sizes: 10, 15, 20, 30 & 40 Yard
Roll-off dumpsters are measured in cubic yards of debris they hold. A 10 yard holds about 3 pickup-truck loads, a 20 about 6, a 30 about 9 and a 40 about 12. Pick by volume for bulky junk and by weight for heavy debris like concrete or shingles.

Dimensions and pickup-truck equivalents are typical figures. Exact container sizes, weight allowances and which sizes are available vary by hauler and are confirmed on your quote.
Volume or weight: which decides your size?
Bulky, light debris such as furniture, boxes, framing lumber and drywall fills a container by volume, so pick the size that holds it. Heavy, dense debris such as concrete, brick, dirt, tile and asphalt shingles reaches the hauler's weight limit long before the container is full, so a smaller container is usually right.
Every flat-rate quote includes a weight allowance. Telling us what you're throwing away keeps the quote accurate.
Will it fit on my driveway?
The 20, 30 and 40 yard containers share a footprint of about 22 by 8 feet; only the wall height changes. The roll-off truck also needs room to back in straight and clearance overhead for the lift. Measure the spot and check for low branches and wires.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most common dumpster size?
The 20 yard. It fits whole-house cleanouts, most roof tear-offs and larger remodels while staying driveway-friendly.
What size dumpster for a whole house cleanout?
Usually a 20 yard; large homes with full basements or garages may need a 30.
Is a bigger dumpster always better?
No. Heavy debris can't fill a big container to the top because of weight limits, and a larger container needs more space. Pick the size that fits the debris.
